Daliso Chaponda is probably Malawi’s most famous comedian after moving from the landlocked country during his early teens. He moved to Canada and began studying performing comedy at University, he hasn’t looked back since and has gone on to build a worldwide comedy career which includes performances at 3 of the biggest comedy festivals in the world – Melbourne, Edinburgh & Montreal. He is without a doubt, one of the finest comedians to come out of Africa.

Chaponda picked up his slick, joke-driven style and easy audience banter from Canada however, he sells it to an audience without dulling his own unique perspective on the world. Every gag here is delivered with a broad grin and an astute social awareness, he even plays the trick of reverse -racism when white people visit his country, the fatalistic Chaponda puts some of himself in the jokes, too, but the experiences are the set-ups for gags rather than probing too deeply into his life.

Chaponda began his comedy career in the wilderness of Canada with his sell out show, ‘Feed This Black Man’ which obviously just from the title was going to win over hearts beyond the pond. He has performed all over the world, after making a name for himself in Canada and the UK he decided that he didn’t have enough black fans so decided to tour Africa, performing in his native, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Nigeria. Daliso has also been known to jump on planes and tell jokes anywhere on the globe (even on the planes – whether the passenger next to him wants to listen or not). In addition to Stand up Comedy, Daliso is also a prolific fiction writer. He has also published science fiction, murder mysteries, erotica, literary fiction, religious fiction and fantasy fiction in numerous magazines and anthologies.
