Want to Hire Jo Brand?

Jo Brand has come a long way since her first ever gig, when she drank several pints of lager before going on stage to endure the relentless heckles of a man shouting ‘F*** off you fat cow’. Thankfully for us, she didn’t give up – and she’s now one of the best female comedians in the country. Hire Jo Brand and you’re getting a real superstar. I wonder where that heckler is now? Perhaps he’s living in a bedsit in Croydon, eating Iceland ready meals and staring at a wall.

Jo Brand’s trademark style

Jo Brand’s strength of personality alone means she doesn’t have to resort to the bells and whistles that other comedians rely on. I mean, why waste your energy running around the stage, when you can simply stand and deliver killer comedy?

Bafta Award winner
Jo Brand started out on TV as the ‘sea monster’, appearing regularly on Saturday Live. Since then, she’s gone from strength to strength and has won a BAFTA for Getting On – the wonderfully observed series set on a hospital’s geriatric ward, which she wrote and starred in.

A comedian of many talents
Jo Brand has written three highly acclaimed best-selling books: Can’t Stand Up For Sitting Down, Look Back In Hunger and The More You Ignore Me. Not afraid to step out of her comfort zone, we saw her go down a storm as the Genie in Aladdin recently. The kids we brought along didn’t know who she was, but afterwards they all said that she was the funniest person in the whole show (high praise indeed, given that she was up against the mighty Matthew Kelly, who did some incredible things with a wig and a beach ball). Oh, and Jo’s also a judge on the celebrity diving series ‘Splash’, shown on ITV.

What people say about Jo Brand
The Observer listed Jo Brand as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and The Guardian described her as ‘…a pioneer for all the female British comics who have followed.’ The Independent described her as ‘the queen of the laconic put down’.
The Times: ‘The laughter never stopped the whole evening… at the finale, the audience would not let Jo leave the stage and cried for more. In true pop star fashion she resumed her position from behind the curtain and delivered a series of one-liners while the audience clapped and cheered.’

Did you know…?
In 2007 Jo Brand appeared in an episode of ‘Play it Again’, where she was required to learn how to play the organ in just four months. This was in preparation to perform for an audience of 8,000 people at London’s Royal Albert Hall on the second largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom. Not bad for a stand up comedian with a background in psychiatric nursing.
