Greg Davies is a very happy man – and it’s wonderfully infectious. After watching one of his shows, we feel like skipping down the street, saying a cheery hello to the nightbus driver, before leading our fellow passengers in ten rounds of ‘Ging gang goolie’. Greg explains his euphoria: ‘I love it all. I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but I spent 13 years in a job that I truly hated, so all of this is playtime to me.’

Greg Davies – how he blossomed

Greg’s decision to move from drama teacher to stand-up comedian was, he says, prompted by ‘…a really strange thing [that] happened in a floatation tank. It was bought for me by an Australian woman.’ This raises many questions in our heads, not least: how did they find a tank big enough…? Greg may have hated teaching drama, but it actually gave him a huge advantage in terms of confidence, so while he was late in coming to stand up, he hit the ground running. His first solo show in 2010 – ‘Firing Cheeseballs At A Dog’ – was nominated for the prestigious Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Awards and a sell-out tour soon followed.

Greg Davies – on the telly
Greg Davies won our hearts as Mr. Gilbert in The Inbetweeners and later gave a great performance as Ken Thompson in Cuckoo. However, his latest project, Man Down, is perhaps the closest to his heart, and features a completely bonkers Rik Mayall as his Dad. Greg has also appeared on numerous TV programmes as his lovely comedy self: Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Mock the Week, Would I Lie To You? and 8 out of 10 Cats, to name but a few.

Greg’s dad
Given that Greg’s dad has featured so heavily in his stand-up and TV work, we thought he deserved a special mention. Greg describes his dad as the funniest man he’s ever met, but he says it was bizarre what he thought was acceptable when he was growing up. The story goes that when a nervous Greg introduced his dad to his first girlfriend when he was 16, his dad’s opening sentence to her was, ‘Of course, I used to wash his penis.’ He didn’t even say, ‘Hello’.
